Rumia Invest Park and Baltic Towers have signed a Letter of Intent for cooperation in development of offshore wind energy within the Pomeranian Offshore Wind Energy Competence Center.
On September 11, Rumia Invest Park, a municipal company, and Baltic Towers signed a Letter of Intent expressing their commitment to collaborate on the development of offshore wind energy through the Pomeranian Offshore Wind Energy Competence Center. This partnership marks an important step in preparing the Pomeranian region for the efficient use of Offshore Wind Energy (OWE) potential and strengthening the local labor market by building necessary competencies.
The signing ceremony took place at Baltic Towers’ headquarters on Ostrów Island in Gdańsk, where a new plant is being constructed to produce towers for offshore wind turbines. The document was signed by Agnieszka Rodak, CEO of Rumia Invest Park, while Baltic Towers was represented by Board Members Jakub Wnuczyński and Bruno Orlando Antunes. The signatories pledged to work together on the development and enhancement of workforce skills in the Offshore Wind Energy (OWE) sector.
Strengthening the Labor Market for Offshore Wind Energy
The signatories understand the pivotal role that Offshore Wind Energy plays in Poland’s energy transition. They committed to joint initiatives supporting the development of the local job market and educational programs in this area. The upcoming Baltic Towers wind tower factory in Gdańsk, with planned production capacities of up to 150 towers annually, will be a key element in the Polish supply chain for offshore wind, creating around 500 new specialized jobs.
“We are constructing a new plant for the production of wind towers for offshore wind farms, specifically towers for turbines with a capacity of over 15 MW. This is the largest investment in the development of the Polish supply chain for OWE, a significant project responding to market demand from our clients and the ambitious energy transition goals at the European level.
The development of offshore wind energy is a major challenge for both Polish and European industries, but it’s also an opportunity we must seize to establish ourselves as a key player in this rapidly growing market. We are witnessing the birth of a completely new industrial sector dedicated to the maritime economy. At Baltic Towers alone, we plan to employ around 500 qualified workers. The Pomeranian region, along with the Polish economy, is developing rapidly in many areas, presenting a significant challenge in terms of the availability of qualified personnel with the skills our company needs. One of the key elements of our personnel strategy is collaboration with organizations like Rumia Invest. We aim to jointly promote new educational paths and career development, showcasing the opportunities that come with the growth of OWE.”
Promotion of Vocational Education
As part of the signed Letter of Intent, Rumia Invest Park and Baltic Towers committed to active collaboration in promoting vocational education. The cooperation will include local educational institutions and labor offices. Both parties will support initiatives such as training and educational programs that enable the development of key skills necessary for professions related to offshore wind energy. Implementing these activities is one of the top priorities for the near future.
Agnieszka Rodak, CEO of Rumia Invest Park, spoke about the Competence Center in Rumia:
“We would like to create an educational and training center in Poland where both young people and technicians can undertake practical and technical training on actual large-scale wind tower components under the guidance of specialists. We are currently working on the concept for the construction and equipment of the Center, and we expect to obtain all necessary administrative permits next year.”
Key Goals of the Cooperation
The parties express their intent to jointly carry out several projects, including the organization of qualification and induction courses for future Baltic Towers employees, as well as promotional efforts to highlight the benefits of working in the OWE sector.
The meeting concluded with an exchange of views on the development of the offshore wind sector, especially regarding the shortage of skilled labor and the need to address the competency gap. Both parties agreed that it is essential to accelerate efforts related to vocational education for youth, upgrading skills, and reskilling workers already present in the labor market. Pomerania, long associated with the maritime economy, has tremendous potential for the growth of this new industrial sector—offshore wind.
